Beneath the frontlines all along the Western Front during the First World War, a deadly underground war was played out by both English and German tunnellers. In late 1916, three Australian Tunnelling Companies joined the allied effort and became part of this massive tunnelling war, firing their mines at Hill 60 and the Caterpillar as part of the successful Battle of Messines in June 1917. This is their story.
