Landing on the second day at Gallipoli, Second Lieutenant Douglas Marks soon came to prominence. Wounded during the campaign, he rose quickly through the ranks, becoming a Lieutenant Colonel at the age of 22 and in command of nearly 1,000 men in the fighting 13th Battalion AIF. Wounded again at Bullecourt, he survived the war, was decorated and returned home to become engaged to Queenie. But fate waited in the wings and his young life was taken tragically in 1920.
