After the German March offensive, Operation Michael in 1918, the war looked all but lost for the allies. However, slowly the German advance was stopped, most notably at Villers Bretonneau and followed, on the 8th August 1918, by the great allied offensive known as the Battle of Amiens. In this the Australians and the Canadians were in the vanguard, resulting in strategically important battles like Mont St Quentin and the breaching of the Hindenburg Line, through to the last AIF action at Monbrehain in October 1918.
