Wounded during the campaign, he rose quickly through the ranks, becoming a Lieutenant Colonel at the age of 22 and in command of nearly 1,000 men in the fighting 13<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion AIF. Wounded again at Bullecourt, he survived the war, was decorated and returned home to become engaged to Queenie.
